The town extends partly on a flat area of land dominated by the Mount Erice or S. Giuliano that closes the Sicilian Channel to the North, and partly coasts the sea.
The area’s other boundaries are represented by the Stagnone lagoon and a sea where the beauty and fascination of the Egadi islands stands out. The whole area offers the opportunity to admire the wonderful sights on the saltpans, that here prevail almost uncontested for about thirty kilometres.
In regards to its minor islands, small but important for their environment and of course tourism, we shouldn’t forget Pantelleria: an island luscious with green and immersed in the sea, with an archaeological ‘flavour’ as the "Sesi" – the graves – and the Phoenician tombs testify, its important agricultural production of capers and “zibibbo” wine grapes from which is produced an excellent table wine and a superb “moscato”, and finally its fascinating sea and wonderful beaches.
Also in this province is Mozia island, precisely in the centre of the Stagnone and nearby Marsala. From the historical viewpoint, this island deserves a mention as it used to be an ancient Phoenician-Punic centre while its landscape and naturalistic beauty are breathtaking.
Geographically the province is very rich of Integral or Oriented Natural Reserves that are included in the natural protection regulations in force and that permit to enjoy this really green, regenerating oasis.
In the province of Trapani there are several reserves: the Natural Oriented Reserve at the Outlet of the Belice River and surrounding dunes, the Stagnone islands in Marsala, the Alcamo forest , the Zingaro, the Trapani’s and Paceco’s saltpans, Mount Cofano, the Lakes of Pergola and Gorghi Tondi and finally the Island of Pantelleria.
Finally we also remind the rural landscapes of the province that contribute to enrich its charm.
